Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lynn Collins star as young lovers in New York who move through two alternating stories—one, an affectionate drama, depicting a family gathering, with troubles and uncertainties roiling below the surface; the other, a thriller, set in Chinatown, in which the couple find a lost cell phone filled with compromising information, witness a murder, and get chased through Mott Street by an assassin. The team of Scott McGehee and David Siegel wrote and directed. The way the two stories comment on each other is more a structural gimmick than a dramatic device, but the directors achieve an unusual degree of intimacy between the lovers, and the movie is gripping to the end.
